Individual match results:

5/07/00 at Westleigh Win 6 - 1 1) Mike Kane Dan Vayner 6-1,6-3 2) Ralph Brown Charlie Papadopolis 2-6,6-2,6-4 3) Wess Seymore Justin Figel 4-6,6-4,6-3 4) Tamra Payne Dave Allen 7-6(4),4-4 retired 1) George Vetticad/ Dan Kenshalo/ 1-6,5-7 Daryl Walston Shozo Takagi 2) Mike Kane/ Lowell Phillips/ 6-1,6-2 Tamra Payne Jerry Eggrams 3) Harry Chiu/ M Prentiss/ 6-2,6-2 Marc Kolodner A Foster Commentary: The team got the season off to a great start by sweeping a formidable singles line-up and clinching the match before the doubles (not too shabby either) got on the courts. The abbreviated match at number four singles took longest of all, with the average rally lasting about twenty strokes! 5/21/00 Racquet Doctor Rain-out 6/ 4/00 at Potomac Valley Win 5 - 2 1) Mike Kane Mike Farrell 0-6,2-6 2) Ralph Brown Ken Stewart 6-4,3-6,4-6 3) Marc Kolodner Bill Szymczak 4-6,6-3,6-4 4) Tamra Payne Kenny Sholes 6-4,6-3 1) George Vetticad/ Sholes/Cremer 7-5,6-4 Daryl Walston 2) Marc Kolodner/ John Sze/ 6-2,6-3 Ralph Brown Tony Cornish 3) Harry Chiu/ Webb/Coakley 6-0,7-6(6) Tamra Payne Commentary: There are "away" matches and there are "AWAY" matches. We played at Poolesville HS, 45 miles each way for some of the team. After the match, Captain Mike Kane reminded the team of the importance of focusing on the team result, not the individual matches. That's right! The team result is the only thing to remember. Club newcomers Marc and Tamra had a part in four of the five match victories. Watch out for them in this season's other club competitions! 6/11 Montgomery Village Win 6 - 1 1) Mike Kane Dave Krucoff 6-4,7-5 2) Fred Sommer Josh Friedlander 6-1,6-4 3) Pat Newell Steve Woolard 6-4,6-7(1) Pat retired 4) Daryl Walston Rolondo Camacho 6-2,6-0 1) Daryl Walston/ Pitts/Pitts 7-5,6-2 Allen Neyman 2) Marc Kolodner/ Barnes/White 6-0,6-2 Rich Zorn 3) Craig McDonald/ Schmid/Olympia 6-3,6-1 Dennis Kershner Commentary: The team continued its winning ways, rolling over some feisty opposition. It's always fun playing the hard-court teams on our home clay. 6/25/00 at Flower Valley Lose 3 - 4 1) Mike Kane John McCarthy 6-2,6-4 2) Ralph Brown John Vlahakis 6-1,6-4 3) Marc Kolodner JP Fauvre 1-6,6-3,5-7 4) Tamra Payne M Lucroft 6-0,6-0 1) Mike Kane/ Abrie du Plooy/ 3-6,4-6 Tamra Payne Jim Belcher 2) Allen Neyman/ Harry Haverkos/ 2-6,2-6 Daryl Walston Gene Sheskin 3) Harry Chiu/ Bob Cook/ 2-6,2-6 Craig McDonald Schockley Commentary: The APL Team suffered their first loss of the season. Captain Mike Kane faced a difficult decision at the end of the singles -- "Who should be thrown to the wolves at number one doubles?" Former ATP touring pro Abrie du Plooy (highest ATP ranking in the 100's) played for Flower Valley. Silver lining -- Mike has paid Abrie for tennis lessons and having lost should be due a refund. 7/09/00 Edgemoor Lose 3 - 4 1) Mike Kane Steve Ornstein 3-6,3-6 2) Ralph Brown Lee Walls 1-6,2-6 3) David Lario Bill Ransohoff 6-3,6-2 4) - - - forfeit 6-0,6-0 1) Marc Kolodner/ Lee Walls/ 4-6,4-6 Allen Neyman Bill Ransohoff 2) Harry Chiu/ Magner/ 4-6,3-6 Craig McDonald Osidach 3) - - - forfeit 6-0,6-0 Commentary: The APL team lost another tough one Sunday. The single bright spot was a debut win by David Lario. After an 8-1 start, our doubles teams are 0-5 in the last two weeks. Plus, the entries for the club doubles tournament are at an all time low. Grab a partner and enter the tournament. Such a close match -- one more forfeit and we would have had them! 7/16/00 at Columbia CC Win 7 - 0 1) Mike Kane Scott Armstrong 6-2,6-1 2) Tamra Payne Matt Gardner 6-2,6-0 3) Ralph Brown Mike Crilley 6-4,6-2 4) Marc Kolodner Bill Maloney 6-1,6-3 1) Mike Kane/ Dave Wendt/ 6-3,3-6,6-4 Tamra Payne Jo Wendt 2) Ralph Brown/ Casey McCormack/ 6-2,6-1 Steve Greif Matt Gardner 3) Allen Neyman/ Bill Maloney/ 6-2,6-4 Eric Zatman Scott Armstrong Commentary: Even after some frantic Saturday evening line-up changes the team scored their first 7-0 match sweep of the season. The team looked sharp in their tennis whites, adhering to the Country Club dress code. The flower boxes at the corners of the courts undoubtedly helped us feel at ease. After all, we're used to having vegetation on the courts. 7/23/00 Cheverly Lose 3 - 4 1) Chris Chiu Jimmy Whitehead 3-6,4-6 2) Tamra Payne Barry Balthrop 4-6,4-6 3) Ralph Brown Mike Deal 6-3,6-7,5-7 4) David Lario Aaron Capre 6-1,7-5 1) Chris Chiu/ J. Whitehead/ 3-6,7-6,(12-10) Tamra Payne B. Balthrop 2) Marc Kolodner/ M. Deal/ 1-6,4-6 Pat Newell 3) Harry Chiu/ A. Capre/ 3-6,6-3,6-2 Dennis Kershner Commentary: Our APL Inter-Club Team finished the season Sunday with a 3-4 loss to undefeated league champion Cheverly. How are we supposed to win when their ringer can beat our ringer!? Chris and Tamra avenged their singles losses in the doubles. David, our teammate from Spain, contributed another strong performance. Maybe we should expand our international recruiting for next year.
